INTRODUCTION
The Riga Technical University Transport and mechanical engineering faculty Institute of Mechanics was founded in year 1994. The pioneer and first director of Institute of Mechanics was LZA academic, Dr.habil.sc.ing., professor Egons Lavendelis.
From year 1999. RTU TMF Institute of Mechanics (MI) is managed by LZA corresponding member, Dr.habil.sc.ing., professor Jānis Vība. Duties of secretary starting already with the foundation of MI are carried out by Māra Celma. Māra Celma at the same time does the office work in all MI structural units.
Based on RTU Institute of Mechanics tuition potencial is developed study programm "Engineertechnics, mechanics and mechanical engineering", wich is accredited in year 2001.
Possibilities of the programm:
1) Bachelor studies. 2) Magister studies. 3) College studies. 4) Engineering studies. 5) Doctor studies.
In the Institute of Mechanics studies are carried out in four levels: (Study levels: K - College, B - Bachelor, I - Engineer, M - Magister, D – Doctor.)
1) Applied mechanics. (B, M, D); 2) Mechanical engineering. (K, B, I, M, D); 3) Production automatisation and recycling technics. (K,B, I, M, D); 4) Bionics and prosthese science. (K, I, M, D).
Institute of Mechanics consists of:
1) Three tuition - investigation groups of professors (Theoretical mechanics; Production automatisation; Prosthese mechanics),
2) One department (Strength of materials);
3) Two scientific laboratories (Oscillation system unlinear effect scientific investigation laboratory; Machine and mechanism dynamic problem scientific investigation laboratory);
4) Three centers (Mechanic expertiese center; Design and ergonomics center, Computer center).
SCIENTIFIC WORK OF INSTITUTE OF MECHANICS
Ingeneral the scientific work is connected with Latvijas Zinātnes padomes and international projects.
Two main international projects wich were led by prof. E. Lavendelis and prof. J. Vība:
